Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) Award Winners Announced!
The 19th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival’s (BiFan, Festival Director KIM Young Bin) Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF) held its awards ceremony Wednesday, July 22nd after its four day schedule.
NAFF finished its 8th year, in which four international jurors evaluated projects and held individual meetings and selected superior film projects from out of the 21 films selected for the It Project, 4 for Project Spotlight China, and 2 Nordic Genre Invasion section.
The 10 Award Categories included Bucheon Award, the NAFF Award, the Medialinks Capital Award, the C2M Award, the WTUF Award, the TOKYOPOP Asian Film Award, and the DHL Award, each of which offer financial assistance for the winners’ production budgets; as well as the Moneff Award, Wave Lab Award, and The Color
Award, each of which offers the winners with post-production support. This year’s jury panel included CineMaven Co-founder Tom DAVIA (USA), Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Executive Director Roger Michael GARCIA (UK), Boram Entertainment Inc. CEO LEE Joo Ick (Korea), and Hollywood Film Producer Mike MACARI (USA). These four jurors selected the award winners on the basis of their marketability, commercial and artistic merit, and likelihood of completion.
The Bucheon Award offers 15,000,000 KRW in production budget assistance and was awarded to director MITSUTAKE Kurando’s fantasy action film, Gun Women: The Patriots (Japan, USA). Director Jimmy WAN’s black horror comedy The Hell Bank Heist (Hong Kong) was selected for the NAFF Award and its 10,000,000 KRW budget support. Director YI Jun’s horror-thriller Dead Sign II: The Night of the Ghost Return (China) was selected for both the Medialinks Capital Award, presented by Medialinks Capitial of China and offering financial assistance of 10,000 USD; and the WTUF Award, presented by World Trade Unity Foundation (WTUF) of China and offering budgetary assistance of 5,000 USD. The C2M Award, presented by China’s C2M Media Group, was awarded to CHAN Nga Lei’s for her fantasy film The Double Life of Myself (China), which offers assistance of 10,000 USD. The TOKYOPOP Asian Film Award, presented by the USA’s TOKYOPOP and includes financing of 5,000 USD, was awarded to director Victor VILLANUEVA for his fantasy/black comedy Ricky Boy the Wonder Boy (Philippines). The DHL Award, sponsored by DHL Korea and offering 5,000,000 KRW in assistance, was presented to director Isabel PEPPARD and her horror-fantasy Silk (Australia).
In the Post-production Support Award category, director CHENG Wei-Hao’s The Tag-Along(Taiwan) receives the Moneff Award (Editing support); PARK Jung Bum’s Never Die Again(Korea) receives the Wave Lab Award (Post-production Sound support), and LEE Seong Tae’sThe Four receives The Color Award (DI Support).
This year’s 27 projects from the It Project, Project Spotlight China, and Nordic Genre Invasion drew the attention from industry insiders from a total of 48 attending companies from around the globe to hold meetings and networkings; a total of 440 business meetings were held.
